Flipped Classroom- Word Study

Here is a flipped classroom lesson I created for elementary word study. It is an introductory lesson for students who are new to Word Study or a refresher for students in the beginning of the year. Take a look!!

At the end of the lesson, the students will practice using a practice word sort.

  1. This was a great lesson Sarah! i liked the video/still combination! It makes it easy to follow and more interesting then just watching one or the other! I really like that idea! Wonderful job, I really enjoyed it! 🙂

  2. I like how you explained that you could use this to explain it to parents. Thats an awesome idea because parents sometimes can’t help their kids with homework because they don’t know how to do it themselves. This would even be great for the beginning of the year explaining how sorts work for kids. Great instructional video. Awesome job!

  3. Your narration is clear and at a slow enough pace for students to understand. You also used think-aloud, which is a strategy students need to learn and use. Great instructions for both students and parents.

  4. Sara, your flipped classroom is so vivid! I really like the fact that you went through each step for the students before even getting to the actual exercise. I also liked that you modeled first what they need to do as well as sound out each example. When you talk about getting together with a partner, I assume they would find a sibling at home or just do it alone?

  5. You can tell that you spent a lot of time making sure all parts of your lesson were explained. You provided your students with explicit directions. The only thing I would recommend would be to include your assessment somehow into your video. Maybe just show what a word sort quiz (template) would look like? Great lesson!

  6. Wonderful Job Sarah! As an upcoming third grade teacher, I would love to use your flipped lesson. I You did such a great job of modelling the word study process!! I can’t wait to see my school kids watching your flipped lesson and taking-away the process:)
My first grader and my third grader loved watching the lesson:)Thank you for doing such a great job!
